the sense.. to do without.

Being sick the past few days got me thinking about the basic normalities of the human body which we sub consciously take for granted. These are none other than the 5 senses that we are all equipped with from the very start of our existence.

Sight, Taste, Smell, Touch, Sense of Hearing.

If you'll allow me to elaborate, the train of thought goes like this. Having had the flu and a horrible blocked/stuffed (whatever you may call it) nose, I so happened to suffer from a temporary loss of taste. This rendered all food to be consumed without much enthusiasm, the only experience being Shihan's description of how it actually tasted like.

That was when I thought about the topic of this session.

The question is : Which sense would you give up (rhetorically) if you could only have 4?

Being in a situation where I could see the food and yet not be able to savour it made me realise that the one sense I would give up would be Sight. To fuel my conclusion, let me bring you through this step by step, sense by sense.

Having the other senses like the smell would allow you to have an idea the aromas of the world. There are certain smells which enables you to connect and have this truly amazing sensation. Something that you'll always remember, touching your soul. Such as, the smells of a great dish in preparation, smelling the roses =), so on and so forth.

The sense of touch gives you the power to differentiate different textures and shapes and the varying temperatures. Not forgetting having an indication of the level of pain your body might be in. Although, pain is not necessary a Good thing to feel but at least with this, we can learn when to avoid getting into such situations.

Hearing the music of the world. How many times have we heard the saying that music heals the soul. The connection sound can get with the inner being is infinite and thus, need I say more?

Taste. Just how many times do we actually have to eat in a day? HAH. That added to Singaporean, Chinese, Peranakan. Imagine the cuisines we will miss.

Which brings me to Sight. Being able to see and not feel, not hear, not taste, not smell. That would be like living in a world devoid of emotions. Cold and callous. So near yet so far...

Therefore, I conclude with my statement as above.

Disclaimer to God:
This was just some wandering thoughts, naturally I would like to keep my senses intact, thank you very much.
