smoking anonymous.

hi, my name is stacie, and this is my story to tell.

you know how it is with smokers, how they start mostly due to curiousity, peer pressure and perhaps this inner ego personality that leads them to believe that 'i can quit whenever i want to'.
well, i assume my dad and bro got started by one or more of the reasons above.

i have been trying to get my dad to quit ever since i realised the harmful effects of smoking which goes all the way back to the early 90s. he started at the age of 15 and carried on all the way to his 40s.

There were many numerous attempts where he tried quitting but to no avail. This was only due to the constant nagging from the family. However, the side effects such as all the bodily malfunctions resulting in him being increasingly short tempered.

This pattern carried on until there came a day of revelation in the 21st century that he has successfully quit smoking. It was something that he accomplished by himself and achieved. I ws so proud of him then.

Recently, I realised that now my brother has caught on the habit of smoking. It started out as a social activity which was heightened by the influence of his friends. The pressure of peers, never underestimate it.

When my parents found out, they were miffed. And naturally, my dad went up to talk to him, apparently to counsel and give appropriate fatherly advice. But what i heard was "If you want to smoke, either be a full timer or quit." Now, isn't that just ludicrous.

Last i noticed, he was rummaging through cupboards and drawers for my brother's ciggies. Even to the extent of calling and asking where they were hidden. My brother said my dad wanted to pick it up again. And my dad said he wants to convince my brother to stop smoking.

My intuition tells me someone is lying.

So it appears, that not only is my baby brother not going to quit, my dad might actually be catching up on his once ex habit.

I hate it that they don't give a damn. All because of this minor addiction that can be stamped out with sufficient determination. I thought that i wasn't bothered by all this, that as long as it makes one happy, it's okay.

However, i realise now that smoking harms and by doing so, they are actually harming themselves. Who can stand by and watch someone you love being hurt without flinching or wanting to put a stop to it?

The lies that follow are incessantly getting on my nerves, the tomorrows that never come and the promises that don't quite get fufilled.

I'm sick and tired of living this facade.

and all because i smelled smoke on my dad's breath, funny how a trigger can release so many pent up emotions.
